The hottest place in town, right now

Holocene is a nightclub in Portland.  They have a website, Twitter account, and Facebook page.  But when you leave the bar nearby at 11pm and want to know what’s next, those are the last places to check.

Built into the discovery on Localweb.is is a Localweb.is URL that shows what is hot / trending withing 3 miles of your location.  If /holocene-club is high on that list you can assume something is going on.  A quick glance will show people posting photos…DJ Kiffo & Rhymes are killing it right now.  And that’s where you want to be.

Holocene can share /holocene-club with their fans, without having to create a new page for every event.  Both the club and Kiffo & Rhymes have an incentive to share it because if it trends that means more eyeballs and more customers.  DJ Vadim just showed up out of nowhere and took over the decks.  The place is going bananas, /holocene-club is going viral within the Portland area. It’s the hottest thing for miles on this Saturday night.

This is where you need to be, now.  Try doing that with a #hashtag.

Location based guest book

Renting out a secluded lodge on AirBnb?  Use a Localweb.is URL like /u/t365/wallowa-lodge to provide a guest book for visitors. The /u/ means its unlisted, so only people who stay in the lodge and see the post-it note on the fridge know about it.  The /t365/ is a time convention built into Localweb.is that means the content is visible for 1 year. This sets it up to act as a collective repository for useful information and memories of the space.

Is the fireplace flue a bit difficult to open and requires you to jiggle it a bit?  Post a note in so future guests know.  Did you find a beautiful clearing about 100 yard off the beaten trail?  Add a photo and some directions for other guests.

Mobile traffic alerts

The I-5 is a busy highway that spans the length of California passing through San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles Counties.  If it’s part of your daily commute or road trip, knowing when it’s jammed up will save you time and probably a headache as well.

Stuck behind an overturned semi-truck at exit 101?  Post to /i-5-delays so other patrons who are monitoring it can get a notification and re-route their trip.  Want to know if the restrooms at the next gas station are clean?  You can easily find out.

Similar Localweb.is URLs could be used for most major highways, as well as one named /traffic-delays for side streets.  Think of it like a version of Waze, but without some of the features… and the $67 million in required funding.

Creatives thinking out loud

Podcasts are a unique medium.  They tend to draw a wide range of people who are asking life’s more interesting questions.,  Since basic audio doesn’t require a lot of technical expertise, anyone with a phone or computer can start small, and quickly.

Philadelphia in particular has a fun and dedicated group of emerging podcasters.  Among the entries at last year’s podcast festival were shows revolving around sports, the local arts community, LGBT talk radio, and a hilarious look at Game of Thrones from local comedians. /philly-podcast-fest could be used in the coming years by attendees to keep track of schedule changes, invite family & friends to participate, and arrange for impromptu appearances across podcasts as the festival grows and the number of venues increase.

Short stories extended

Many places are important historically as well as in real-time or near real-time…but there isn’t a relationship between the two.  The world wide web tends to encourage static versions of history that have to be updated manually, whereas stories from a landmark like Trafalgar Square are constantly evolving.

A Localweb.is a URL like /trafalgar-sq-stories could hold both types of stories while remaining specific and relevant to the location.  Tales of protests held there over the years, photos of Elizabeth Taylor feeding thousands of pigeons in the late 1940s, links to the Monty Python sketches filmed there, a story of the lovers who met and fell in love there decades ago. These are the stories otherwise lost to history that inspire casual visitors and long time residents alike.

Sea to table

Just to the southeast of Seville, Spain is a small city of 67,000 people that goes by the name of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.  Like many cities     on the Atlantic coast, fishing is a primary industry, but modes of communication have remained the same for decades.  Two-way     radio and radar keep boats safe, but with changes to the economy many fisherman now have to juggle communications as they rely       on delivering their catch the same day to popular restaurants thriving on Sanlúcar’s tourism business.

No one is building them an app and probably won’t be anytime soon. But a Localweb.is URL like /daily-catch-sanlúcar could be easily used by fisherman to communicate with restaurants.  Instead of radioing each separately, they could simply post a note in to update the day’s catch and when they’ll be returning to the dock, so that restaurants could update their menu on the spot for customers and give their kitchen a heads up,  This makes “sea to table” even easier for a region that’s already known as a gastronomic utopia.

Computing  for all

The world wide web is amazing, but it often fails when it comes to problems that need solving at a local level.  /cl-vignan-cs201 is an example of a URL that takes advantage of how the Localweb.is platform is structured.

In addition to accessing nearby information patrons can come up with their own conventions, like “cl” which denotes “computer lab.”  That way if you’re a student or instructor that’s responsible for or wants to access to multiple computer labs, you can easily do so.  Need to see if there’s an open spot in the lab?  Use /cl-vignan-cs201 as a check-in / waiting list.  1:40am and no one is left?  The student monitor can post a note to let people know it’s closing early.

All the places

Skateboarding culture is constantly in flux.  When the lights go out, when the noise fades, it’s not about competitions or sponsorships.  It’s about that kid throwing 3am nollie impossibles over and over again on the Queensboro bridge on-ramp median at 2nd Ave & East 59th.

Skating thrives on staying under the radar.  An unlisted Localweb.is URL like u/secret-skates can be used by skaters in Oakland to track spots and show unique, place-specific tricks, or in New York to quickly scout out a few block radius for an informal weekend competition.

Building with what’s available

Rocky Norton is an artist who often focuses on merging form/function via reused materials.  Splitting time between Oakland and Albuquerque, he travels frequently and creates pieces with whatever he can get his hands on locally.  His works include transforming exterior landscapes with metal and wood, and furniture pieces made from materials discarded at houses, businesses and scrap yards.

/rocky-norton-design complements something Rocky is already doing.   When he goes on the road he’ll usually notify friends, family, and previous customers.  Anyone that has a potential job or simply a few bucks can set up coffee or a hangout to think through an idea with Rocky for a unique piece of furniture made with materials on hand or nearby.  /rocky-norton-design can be used by friends of friends to give him a heads up about scrap metal nearby, by the commissioner of a project to add nails/braces/latches to a shopping list, or for anyone interested to simply track progress of the project.  And all without needing to trade emails, download a new app, or decide which circle or friends list should see which content.

Library on the move

Retired school teacher Antonio La Cava travels the countryside of Italy talking with children and their parents about the joy of reading.

His mobile library houses 700 books and an organ that announces   the arrival of Il Bibliomotocarro.  La Cava believes that schools too often teach reading and writing techniques without showing kids   how to read with love, to immerse themselves in the stories / experiences in books.

/f/bibliomotocarro could be used to list categories and titles of books, let people know when he is closed for a lunch break, and keep people updated on his travel schedule.  Since it’s a following URL ( /f/ ) it sticks to La Cava wherever he goes, making it easy for him to communicate with library patrons as he switches locations.

Food where and when it matters

Swingers is one of those institutions that all towns have: the coffee shop turned greasy spoon diner that everyone knows about.

Open til the early hours of the morning, famous and regular people alike flock to the Santa Monica and Hollywood locations to devour blue corn nachos, peanut butter banana shakes, and even vegan/vegetarian options like a cobb salad and quinoa & eggs.

But the world wide web isn’t that friendly to Swingers.  Right now they’re trying to maintain a Yelp page, a Facebook page for each location, a Twitter feed, and their own website.  Even a small menu change is a lot of work, not to mention they don’t have an easy way for people to order ahead.  With /swingers-diners they’d be able to do things like post daily specials, alert when a new vegetarian item is available, make a quick list of people waiting for a table, and enable their customers to easily add an order when they’re 15 minutes away…all based on each location, and fitting into their no nonsense approach to good food in a low key diner environment.

Local organizing

Two years ago Stephen Davis spoke up about something that worried hundreds of Buford, GA residents.  The intersection of Braselton Hwy (State Road 124) and Lena Carter was becoming more and more dangerous, but the Georgia Department of Transportation said there weren’t enough cars to justify adding a traffic light.

As a major thoroughfare and an access road for the local middle       and high schools, it sees a lot of traffic including inexperienced,   young drivers.  There were multiple accidents and residents were afraid someone might die.  Quick thinking led Stephen to submit a Change.org petition, and with the help of a state senator and local     TV news station, he got the Dept. of Transportation to approve     adding a traffic signal.

While Buford is now safer, thousands of towns and cities across the U.S. deal with the same problems.  Local and state government are often reluctant to act quickly.  A Localweb.is URL like /SR124-lena-carter-junction could be used to quickly post and update images, videos, personal accounts, and to track progress with organizing a petition, city council meetings, all before any lives are lost.

Freelance help at the right time           in the right place

We’ve all run into it: a small task that shouldn’t take long but requires the convenience and ease of meeting someone in person.

Right now the social web forces us to ask everyone we know to amplify it, in hopes of locating the right person to help.  For most of us that’s impractical, and we end up searching the web at large plus tacking on location.  Unless we get lucky or have a network of thousands, it just doesn’t work.  Localweb.is URLs like /quick-dev-gigs can help us…without a new app for every problem, without shouting across the world wide web when what we really need is someone who is sitting in the coffee shop a few blocks away.

Local, real-time tour updates

For the last couple of years the band Megafauna has been traveling constantly, playing and hanging out with fans across the U.S.  As most bands do, they maintain a presence on social networks but it’s time consuming and repetitive to create a separate page for each of the dozens of shows per tour.

What they need is a way to reach fans at around each show. /megafauna-on-tour is a way to make that happen.  Simply sharing the link once on a page of tour dates makes it easy for fans to organize & connect around the show in their city.  The band can also use /megafauna-on-tour to let fans know they’re close, ask about the best local spot for burritos, and post in updated set times.

Teacher-parent communications

Communicating with your child’s teacher is often a challenge.   Sending juice stained notes back and forth in your child’s backpack   feels like it belongs in the last century.   And email or texting the teacher isn’t always an option, with or without the boundary issues.

In this example the teacher has setup an unlisted Localweb.is URL for each student and sent it home to the parent.  If the child was misbehaving or needs to get that pizza form in, the teacher can just post in /u/FBPS-Bach38.  Likewise, if the child “really needs to look in the lost and found for their mittens” the parent can simply add a note. The parent then has all the info in one place and can check quickly or be notified if there is an update.

Localized disaster relief

On March 11, 2011 the Tōhoku earthquake struck just off the Eastern coast of the Oshika Peninsula in Japan.  At 9.0 it was the strongest earthquake to ever hit the country, causing massive tsunamis that reduced much of the Sendai region to rubble.  Among the reported damages: nuclear power plants, hospitals, schools, and sea ports…along with the loss of 15,000+ lives.

One of the reasons we’re building Localweb.is is we believe it has the potential to impact lives in dramatically positive ways.  A Localweb.is URL like /sendai-recovery-8 could help people in similar natural disaster scenarios quickly find and organize nearby resources, clear debris, and start rebuilding.
